How to Make a Charm Bracelet, Step by Step
Making a charm bracelet doesn't take tools or jewelry skills. You choose a bracelet, measure your wrist, and slide the charms on one at a time. This guide covers the slide-on kind, where charms thread onto a chain, bangle or cord and can be moved or swapped later. (If you're looking for a wire or jump-ring craft project, that's a different technique.)
The steps
1. Choose your bracelet
The bracelet sets the look and how the charms sit. Our charms and Murano glass beads fit every bracelet below.
- Snake chain: the classic choice. Charms move freely along a smooth sterling silver chain, and the clasp becomes part of the design.
- Bangle: a rigid shape that keeps its circle. Open the clasp, slide charms on, close it again.
- Braided or leather: softer and more casual, and a good way to add color. See our braided bracelets.

- Wrap a soft tape measure around your wrist, just below the wrist bone.
- Add 2โ2.5 cm for a comfortable fit with charms.
- Planning ten or more charms? Choose one size up, because charms take up room.
- Between sizes, or buying a gift? Take the larger size.
Our size guide has the full chart.
3. Plan the layout

There's no rule, only a look you like. These ranges are a useful guide:
- Up to 5 charms: light, with plenty of chain showing. Easy to grow later.
- 6โ9 charms: balanced. The bracelet looks full from the front and still moves freely.
- 10โ15 charms: full, a complete story around the wrist.
Lay the charms out on a table before you start. Put the piece that matters most in the middle, then work outwards, alternating colors and sizes so the bracelet doesn't look lopsided. Murano glass beads add color; a dangle charm adds movement.
4. Put the charms on

- Open the clasp and hold the bracelet by the end with the clasp.
- Slide the first charm onto the open end and move it along the chain.
- Add the rest in the order you planned.
- Close the clasp and check that it's fully shut.
Want to change things later? Open the clasp and slide charms off or move them around. Nothing is fixed.
5. Keep charms in place
On a snake chain, charms slide around as you move. Two small pieces fix that:
- Clip charms open and close over the chain and grip it, so the charms beside them stay where you put them. One at each end of a group is the usual setup.
- A safety chain clips on either side of the clasp. If the clasp opens, the bracelet stays on your wrist.

6. Check the fit and look after it
Put the bracelet on and turn your wrist. It should move without sliding over your hand. If it feels tight once the charms are on, the next size up will sit better.
To keep sterling silver bright, wipe it with a polishing cloth after wearing and store it somewhere dry. Our silver care guide has the details.

Questions
Do I need any tools?
No. Slide-on charms go on by hand. Open the clasp, thread them on and close it.
How many charms should I start with?
Two or three is a good start. Add more for birthdays, trips and milestones.
Do Murano glass beads fit the same bracelets?
Yes. Our Murano glass beads have a 925 silver core with a 4.3 mm hole and slide on like any other charm.
Can I make a charm bracelet as a gift?
Yes. Choose the larger size if you can't measure her wrist. Every order arrives in an ATHENAIE gift box with a polishing cloth.
